«Malian kora ace Toumani Diabaté is probably best known to the British mainstream as a star guest of various artists including his legendary late compatriot Ali Farka Touré, Björk and US bluesman Taj Mahal.
Diabaté’s long-awaited new solo album offers deeply personal expressions, including a thoughtful and stirring homage to Farka Touré, drawing out the intricate beauty of his 21-stringed West African harp.
It also reveals an artist with a collaborator’s spirit: responsive to varied styles and open to improvisation.
He draws on his own past material alongside traditional devotional songs, journeying from Arabic prayers to strands of spaghetti Western – and last number Cantelowes takes its inspiration from a road in North London.»
