El guitarrista, Tal Farlow, se inició en el jazz fascinado por la figura y la forma de tocar del gran Charlie Christian. Su carrera profesional la inició en 1948 cuando se incorporó a la banda de Marjorie Hyams y desde entonces hasta el final de su vida fue considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas de la historia del jazz. Entre 1949 y 1953, formó parte del trío de Red Norvo. Cuando se despidió de Norvo, estuvo durante seis meses con la orquesta de Artie Shaw.
Con un prestigio ya consolidado y con una reputación musical importante, Tal Farlow, inicia en 1953 su larga, prolija y extraordinaria carrera como líder de su propio grupo comenzando muy pronto en ese mismo año su debut discográfico con el álbum grabado para Blue Note titulado genéricamente «Tal Farlow Quartet». Fue su primer y único disco para Blue Note. El año siguiente firmaría un contrato con la Verve donde grabaría lo mas selecto de su discografía destacando por encima de todos el magnifico álbum: «Autumn in New York». Sólo por su versión de «Cherokee» ya vale la pena hacerse con este álbum donde Chico Hamilton a la batería y Ray Brown, al contrabajo contribuyen notablemente al éxito de la sesión de grabación.
Poseedor de una técnica irreprochable, una alucinante velocidad de digitación y sobre todo un fraseo imparable y rebosante de swing, Tal Farlow, es un guitarrista desconocido para el gran publico. Oscurecido por la larga sombra de Charlie Christian y Django Reinhardt, Tal Farlow es una de las figuras del jazz que es necesario redescubrir para disfrute de una música absolutamente maravillosa. También su carrera, llena de apariciones y deserciones continuas, no contribuyó demasiado a que los aficionados al jazz vieran en él a un músico a seguir. Hoy afortunadamente, sus álbumes están siendo reeditados con notable acierto por el sello Verve. Tal Farlow, murió a la edad de 77 años victima del cáncer.
