Big Maybelle – What More Can a Woman Do? (1962)

Otro aporte de David. Thanks

This is a good album, but it doesn’t really represent Big Maybelle (born Mabel Louise Smith). The label was seemingly attempting to pop-up Maybelle to sound like Timi Yuro (who seemingly got inspiration from Maybelle’s vocal stylings). If one is unfamiliar with Maybelle’s great early sides for Okeh and Savoy, then this is a good pop statement of the time period. But, Maybelle was capable of so much more; on a few tracks she seemed constrained and attempting to break free. Definitely worth hearing, but one should also search out her earlier tracks, as well for a more complete picture of this artist.
